Summary says it all: pan changes CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK in global scope. It should probably be installing a file into /etc/env.d setting this instead, like the gconf and ncurses ebuilds do.

I removed it completely as gconf installs it's own env.d file containing an appropriate CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK entry.
