Description Florian Mickler 2006-03-06 12:41:59 UTC
If I try to print a pdf from cmdline via lp or if I print it via gtklp I get a problem (i think this is around for about 2-4 months or so but cannot say for certain... before everything worked like a charm)

The Problem: Printing an a4-sized pdf on a4 paper results in the pdf not fitting on the paper. some cm on each side are cut off.

this problem persists when printing the pdf manually converted via pdftops into a postscript file or printing 2 pages on one

I have checked all configfiles(/etc/cups/;.lpoptions) for paperformat. (a4 everywhere)

however, attached is a cupsd/debug2 log of a print. and it seems that the papersize is somehow somewhere "upgraded" to letter. but i have no idea why that is.

the cups-people say that it has to be an distribution-level bug due to an alternate pdftops filter (or whatever)

strange .. are you using gs-esp or gs-gnu or gs-afpl? Try with -gnu please.

error_log with ghostscript-gnu (not printing anymore)

this is what i did:
i ran
emerge sync
emerge unmerge ghostscript-esp && emerge ghostscript-gnu
etc-update.
i deleted the cups-error log and then restarted cupsd.
after that i tried to print the pdf.
but it seemed to have a problem with the pagerange or else.. (no pages found)

so the problem is away, but i cannot print anymore ( i didn't try printing smth else)

but in the logfile there is again emerging the letter-format...

thx for your fast response!

I have quite the same problem on my ~amd64 with HP LaserJet 1160... But in my case the problem just occures when i try to print a pdf file with landscape-orientation: In my case it ALWAYS prints using portrait orientation, no matter if i change it manually to landscape orientation or not, but regular portrait oriented pdf-files work fine (even if i print more pages onto one sheet...)

The log files show nothing suspicious and my cups-configfiles seem to be alright.

I already tried ghostscript-gnu with no success (No pages found error in error_log and not printing at all) after i changed back to ghostscript-esp, i was able to print again, but i still have the problem with the orientation...

Oh and before i forget to mention it: it worked before... Like a charm
Comment 5 Florian Mickler 2006-03-10 12:50:10 UTC
when i change back to ghostscript-esp i can print again, but with the original error (page does not fit)

can i provide somehow more debug information or try smth to resolve this?

greets,
Florian

ghostscript-afpl?

Or try to remove some patches from the ebuild to see if it is caused by our patching.
Otherwise I can only give you the tip to report it to the upstream developers, so that they can fix it.
Comment 7 Gen2 2006-03-11 12:44:10 UTC
Okey i gave ghostscript-afpl a try and nothing changed it still looks the same...

i didn't actually print it this time i just looked at the page preview and i still have everything in portrait orientation if i change it to landscape manually...

I dunno if i'm motivated enough to continue playing around with patches, but when my roommate returns after this weekend I'm going to ask him what version of ghostscript he's using cuz he can print everything (landscape, portrait, multiple pages on one sheet...) with my printer usinc CUPS without any problems...
Comment 8 Gen2 2006-03-12 15:41:20 UTC
Okey i tried the version my roommate is using and it didn't help...

Now i'm out of ideas what could be broken...
Comment 9 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-02 09:50:43 UTC
what version of gs is your roommate using, gen2?

I guess this whole bug is related to the gs-esp-7 -> gs-esp-8 bump .. they somehow managed to break all kind of stuff.
Comment 10 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-30 07:18:15 UTC
Can you please try with ghostscript-esp-8.15.1_p20060430?

it is the latest version around and should fix bugs.

I see the exact same thing (no pages found) after switching from gs-esp to gs-gnu.

I have tried re-emerging cups, foomatic-filters, gimp-print without any luck.
Anyone have a hint on how tho make gs-gnu work?
Comment 12 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-03 06:08:21 UTC
try gs-esp-8 :)
Comment 13 Andreas Vinsander 2006-05-03 06:42:50 UTC
Oh, I thought that gs-esp was phased out in favour of gs-gnu...
I just looked at the ebuild for lilypond (the app that tried to pull in
gs-gnu for me, and made me manually unmerge gs-esp-7) and realized that any of the gs-*-8 would do...
Time to keyword gs-esp-8 and try that on my x86_64 box.
Comment 14 Andreas Vinsander 2006-05-03 07:45:02 UTC
gs-esp-8_p20060430 worked splendid!
Thanks for the hint!
Comment 15 Florian Mickler 2006-05-10 13:10:47 UTC
Hi,
i finally came around testing the newest ghostscript-esp version (app-text/ghostscript-esp-8.15.1_p20060430).

It now prints correct. But my duplexer has stopped working!
if i switch back to the unmasked ghostscript-esp version the duplexer works again.

thx for the hint with the new version though...
Comment 16 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-18 18:09:57 UTC
UPSTREAM gs-gnu is kinda dead I suggest using -gpl or -gpl. Thanks.
Comment 17 Florian Mickler 2006-08-22 05:38:39 UTC
with ghostscript-gpl these problems are gone...

thx...
