The system was also recently emerge -eav world after the gcc-3.4.5 upgrade (just in case).

I have similar problem:

Huh? Completely unrelated, move it elsewhere...

This wasn't a real problem. I ran ldconfig, re-sourced profile, restarted ssh and reconnected to the server and re-started the ebuild and everything continued.
