Description Richard van Schaik 2006-03-02 04:11:03 UTC
When the LiveCD is booting is suddenly freezes, and this is what I see on my screen:

>> Copying read-write image contents to tmpfs
cp: etc/DIR_COLORS: No such file or directory

The system has 64 mb ram and it is a Pentium II, so it met all the requirements.
I hope someone can/will fix this.
Thank you in advance!

Does it actually say somewhere that 64MB of memory is enough to boot the LiveCD?

I've just tried to boot the LiveCD at my laptop with 512 mb ram, and it hangs at the same point. The md5sum from the cd is correct.

I have an A Series Hp rp2400 Server, same issue.  although, once i get booted iwth gentoo-nofb passed to the kernel, it hangs right after trying to mount squashfs.  Might not be related;

Look into doing a gentoo-nofb install.

Good Luck

Andrew, can you verify that the new LiveCD (and possibly 2006.0's) boots on 64MB under VMware? If not, I'd like to make sure the Handbook is properly updated with the correct minimum requirements for 2006.1's release.

Neither launches gnome completely with 64MB, and both appear to boot fine with 96MB.

GDP: Can I get you guys to make sure that the 2006.0 Handbook (as well as the upcoming 2006.1) mentions the requirement for at least 96MB of RAM for the LiveCD, as well as being i686-compatible. The Minimal InstallCD still boots on 64MB (and possibly lower), however.
Comment 7 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-19 09:14:18 UTC
2006.0 HB already mentions i686, but with 128 MB
Are you happy as it is, or would you want to s/128/96/ ?

Current handbook will be updated to reflect the same values for LiveCD and with i486 & 64 MB for Minimal CD
Comment 8 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-19 13:19:58 UTC
Ahh... so it lists only the Minimal requirements in the online Handbook?

In that case, simply adding the LiveCD requirements should suffice.

While we could reduce it to 96MB, since Andrew tested it and verified that it works, 128MB really is the bare minimum for it to be usable.
Comment 9 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-19 13:35:19 UTC
2006.0 had i686/128 MB
current had i486/64 MB and didn't mention the LiveCD higher requirements.
Sorry.

Requirements table now has a col for Minimal CD and one for LiveCD.

Thanks Xavier!
