very similiar to this bug: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95876 when switch from runlevel 3 to 1 or form 1 to 3 I get a login prompt but if I press [enter] i get a shell. this all happens to all the other vt/n. this behaviour doesn't happen with other distros (tried on ubuntu and slackware) as it should be. it seems the problem is some rc script of baselayout. STEP TO REPRODUCE: 1) # telinit 1 2) watch what happens 3) # telinit 3 4) watch what happens regards, tek here's emerge --info output (tried also on other gentoo machines with 2005.1): Portage 2.0.53 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.6, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.11-gs-r 9-custom2 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gs-r9-custom2 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.20 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -fpic -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X1 1/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -fpic -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/gentoo/ http://pandemonium.tiscal i.de/pub/gentoo/ http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/" LANG="it_IT" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 apm audiofile avi bash-completion bitmap-fonts bzip2 cdr crypt curl eds emboss encode ethereal expat foomaticdb geoip gif glut gmp gpm gstreamer gtk2 i dn imlib jpeg lcms libg++ libwww menubar mikmod mmx mng mp3 mpeg ncurses ogg ope ngl pam pcre pdflib perl pic png python quicktime readline samba sse sse2 ssl tc pd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev vorbis xml2 xmms xv zlib userla nd_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
*** Bug 151689 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
This problem still lingers in 2006.1, is anyone working for a resolution? I think it's not just a matter of baselayout, it also applies to sysvinit. Both sulogin and agetty are trying to acquire tty1 at telinit 1, so maybe sulogin in /sbin/rc should only be called when user is NOT at tty1? Or, agetty should not be forked for tty1 at runlevel 1?
This should be fixed in baselayout-1.13.0_alpha9
