Here is a slight bug in your documentation.

I downloaded the 

 "install-x86-universal-2005.1,iso" 

and the 

 "Gentoo_Linux 2005_1_x86_Handbook". 

In code listing 12 of the handbook it says to use a directory called 
 "snapshots" 
on the CD, it actually needs to read 
 "snapshot".

Other than that, no problem. First time doing a by hand install and kernel build (to get an SMP kernel for an old dual proc PII), and it worked first time! Thanks for the great distro.

That's because you use a wrong cd. This bug was fixed in 2005.1-r1 media refresh.
See bug 102128.
