during recent system maintaince (emerge world -u), i upgraded xorg-server to 1.0.4-r4. but after a restart X, kernel panics. Call Trace: <IRQ> <ffffffff8012f866>{__wake_up+38} <ffffffff8816221a>{:fglrx:ke_irq_handler_wrap+10} <ffffffff8015538c>{handle_IRQ_event+44} <ffffffff80155480>{__do_IRQ+192} <ffffffff801115af>{do_IRQ+47} <ffffffff80139240>{ksoftirqd+0} <ffffffff8010f0c8>{ret_from_intr+0} <EOI> <ffffffff8010eb26>{system_call+26} xorg-server-1.0.1-r3 ran quiet well with no problem, so it *MIGHT* be a newly introduced bug from 1.0.1-r4. but when i try falling back to 1.0.1-r3, the ebuild's just not there anymore. (google search on xorg-server-1.0.1-r3.ebuild does no help, every mirror sites have been updated.) i've tested with my older kernel (2.6.15-r1), same problem exists. i've done a "emerge xorg-server ati-drivers", same problem exists. i've switched the driver in xorg.conf from "fglrx" to "ati", and it works for now (without GLX). i'm not certain if it really is caused by the new version of xorg-server, because i have no other choice other than 1.0.1-r4. maybe next time updating ebuilds, you may leave a older useable copy of the package in order if anything goes wrong. (no offence, just a suggestion. however without a opengl environment made me sort of upset.) sorry for my poor english.

This same trace occurs for me without using xorg-server.
Created attachment 80595 [details] Ticket filed with ATI My current ticket with ATI.
Hmm, seems I'm not alone. The same (or almost) problem appears when I start X (not using xorg-server). Ati (X600, pci-e, radeon and ati driver tested in xorg.conf), gentoo-sources 2.6.14, x11r6.8.2. I get few seconds working in terminal without KDE, and an immedate crash with. Shall I make a separate bug report?
Here was the "solution" from ATI. ATI Proprietary Linux driver is designed to support the following Linux distributions: Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite Novell/SuSE product suite We currently do not support any other distributions. You may click on the link below and go to its website to find information that might be helpful to your case. Our Engineers are informal contributors. http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page (no. there was no information related on the wiki, and I doubt this ticket ever got near an engineer) I will try one last time.
As they requested, I filed a "linux feedback" ticket. BTW, here's a great way to pretty reliably crash this driver. startx then startx -- :1 Two X sessions running, and switching between 'em, seems to freeze it wonderfully. Of course, hard to get a trace without being at a console window.
I see this issue on an x86 system, xorg-server-1.0.1-r2, ati-drivers-8.22.5, manually installed kernel 2.6.15.6-ifc. The -ifc patch is just a single file patch to ACPI to allow better fan control on an IBM Thinkpad T43 Laptop. For me it happens NEARLY every single time I log out of, or otherwise exit, xorg. Sometimes it does not, as in I go to reboot, and it does not hang. But what does happen is the screen goes blank. The system continues to reboot, but I can't see any console at all like I used to be able to. Strange line wraps thanks to kde, I guess. As an additional note, bug 122552 may be related to this.
Well, I get the same thing
this bug have been fixed with ati-drivers-8.23.7. at least on my environment.
AFAIK, this bug can be closed.
problem fixed with x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.28.8.
