lets say i wanna use gnome applications but no gnome-desktop. so if i compile gnome xmms it neeeds gnome-panel-1.4 also!! even if for example i have in USE gtk2 and gnome and i use gnome2-desktop. it needs to compile gnome-panel as well besides gnome-panel2 that i already have. that's useless. i think that you should add USE for gnome1applets and gnome2applets so gnome-panel won't be built for nothing. or that the applets won't be built at all.variables
you suggest a panel USE flag ? I don't think it adds much, either you want gnome addons or you use -gnome . The only use would be in gnome1 apps (of which only a few have applets), i don't think it's worth the effort since we're steadily moving towards all gnome2 versions of gnome1 apps by now.
ok i see your point. still lets say people want to use gnome2 apps but don't want gnome2 applets! for example they use enlightenment or kde and don't need these applets and don't want gnome-panel. maybe you should just add a USE for gnome2 applets or gnome applets in general.
look at the payoff here, adding an extra use flag vs the one more lib installed (they got the other gnome-libs, they don't use -gnome) plus that only a few applications use applets (since gnome2 notification area even less) i don't think it's worth it.
ok :)
