mod_php-4.2.3.ebuild contains the following line : 
(in the DEPEND=" part..)
imap? ( >=net-mail/uw-imap-2001a-r1 )

The problem is that uw-imap is NOT the only IMAP server availaible on gentoo.
courier-imap is another one, for example, so a possible fix would be to also 
add courier-imap, or create some virtual imap-server dependency that all
imap-servers would fulfill.

Sorry, actually, it really needed uw-imap to compile, not just any IMAP server.
I changed the buf status to FIXED..
