Description Andres Pereira (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-02-17 22:25:39 UTC
The 'Troubleshooting' section is outdated since Xfree and hardened-gcc ebuilds aren't available in the tree anymore. And the 'Using Distcc to Bootstrap' section mentions: "Boot your new box with a Gentoo Linux LiveCD and follow the installation instructions up until the bootstrapping part". Well, bootstrapping isn't mentioned by default in the handbook. Perhaps a warning or note could be added about this.

That Xfree reference can be removed with no problems. I suggest the bootstrapping link be updated to the stage 1 instructions available in the FAQ. I'll be happy to do this myself in a little bit; have some other projects to do first. :)

distcc.xml.patch

Removes the outdated hardened stuff as well as changes Xfree to Xorg. Also revises the bootstrapping section.

As stated in the <!-- comment --> in the patch, until the 2006.0 handbooks are moved to /doc/en/handbook/, the existing installation link can remain. Once the new handbooks have superceded the old, however, a link to the 2005.1 handbooks must be used, as only these handbooks have directions for CLI stage1/2/bootstrapping procedures.

Please review and comment on the patch before it is applied.

That's good for now. I do want to remove all the stage1 stuff and put it on my devspace and simply link from the distcc doc, but this is a good change for now.

I'll close this as REMIND and assign it to me, you can commit this diff, s'cool.

In CVS. Poke me later for when it needs to be updated for the new docs (2006.0 will be released very shortly, so...)

FYI, The 2005.x has never had stage1/2 instructions and neither will 2006.0.
Besides, they were removed from the current handbook months ago.
The only place where stage1/2 are now mentioned is the faq, just like you patched the file. This is our only option.
There's no way we could add "a link to the old 2005.1 networked handbooks" because there is no such thing.

This was fixed in CVS on 2006-04-06.
