Description Armin Prenzer 2006-02-15 07:37:23 UTC
Hello,

I have installed Gentoo and KDE 3.5 and i use the newest stage 3 version and now the newest gentoo-sources but the GUI hangs in various situations. The fist time it hangs i wont to use a 3D application, the only one i can do is to restart the computer. The next time the system hangs, i used the controle center of KDE and the next time was only the login window of kdm. I have checked the xorg.conf file i have checked every log file i found on my system i cand find an entry witch is the reasent the system hangs. If someone is hier in the Gentoo Team who can halp me ore have the same problem and knows something about, it was wery good.
A litle info, the same problem is with SUSE 10.0. I think it may be a kernel problem, but i don't no were i can found the bug.

Kind regards

Uhm, if you are having exactly the same problem with multiple distributions, then this is not a Gentoo issue. I'd recommend to check your hardware first... Also, forums.gentoo.org is a better place to seek help, bugzilla is not a support forum.

This kind of bug should first be discussed on forums.

Logs you want to check are
/var/log/messages
and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Question is: is it software freeze ? or hardware ?
- may be any software
- or a video card driver
- or faulty memory
- or too low cooling and CPU freeze ...

a computer can freeze for *many* reasons ... (but rarely for cold ^^ )

First test: see how much time it takes fto freeze when you use it, if it's about 10 minutes, then, try to leave it 20 minutes without doing any thing after boot, and see if it has frozen by the mean time.

I have a lock at the nvidia side and i have seen that my problem seems to be a nvidia problem. Some others has there also the problem that the X server hangs if they opens a 3D application. I think that KDE with the keramik theme also needs 3D to render the buttons and so on and that should be the problem that my X server freeze. I think we can mark this bug as VERIFIED or CLOSED and wait vor nvidia, that they create a newer version ov the nvidia kernel driver.
I mark this bug as VERIFIED. if some one thinks we can mark this bug as CLOSED than do it so.
Thanks for help.

what Jakub meant was that your description was way too much ambiguous.

When you are not sure whats the problem, go on forums FIRST. If other people can reproduce, then they will explain you how to write a proper report.

The status Jakub put was already definitive.

FUI, Nvidia does not read Gentoo bugs, and is not to solve *your* problem.

But maybe you dont even knwo there are three nvidia drivers !
- free GPL 2D
- free GPL 3D
- close source and license closed NVidia ...

but your bug may even have source in other softwares, like DRM, xorg, AGP ...

or maybe famous hardware APG bugs, such as GPU or central chipset freese when AGP starts 3D die, induce high current load, and produce voltage drop around AGP plug ...

If you are not sure about xorg, or KDE, then start the app in X without window manager ! test various kernel drivers ...

so, start a discussion in FORUMS, and stop bugging b.g.o.
