Hey Gentoo!

I've been using *nix for about four years now, and just recently moved over to gentoo after hearing amazing things about it. Thus far, I am very impressed. I would also like to congratulate you on the "Gentoo Handbook" effort... it really is phenomenal, and is, in my opinion, a testimony to one of Gentoo's defining features - its community.

I've installed Gentoo twice now, and have come across two things I thought I might shoot your way:

1) When going over the partitioning scheme, you tell users to make their /boot partition bootable... however, if they all ready have an existing Windows partition that they plan on dual booting with, this could cause issue for them. I would suggest including a note for Windows dual-booters for whom declaring /boot as bootable is a bad idea.

2) In my most recent install of Gentoo, I decided I wanted to have everything brand new on install... i.e., not off the CD. This meant having networking up and running in the chrooted environment, instead of just the liveCD. I followed the directions in the Handbook for doing this, but could not get it working... and ended up having networking only in the liveCD. My fix for this was copying /etc/resolv.conf from the liveCD environment to the chrooted environment. This might help other users trying to accomplish the same thing I was.

Keep up the good work!

Ben

1)
The handbook is for Gentoo installaton. If you want to dual boot then you need to set that up yourself. Besides, I think you are supposed to mark the windows partition AND the /boot partition as bootable. I've never had a need for dual boot so I don't know for sure. Can someone else verify this?

2)
Networking is setup outside the chroot and then resolv.conf is copied into the chroot.

section 6.a:

Code Listing 3: Copy over DNS information

(The "-L" option is needed to make sure we don't copy a symbolic link)
# cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf

I've dual-booted with Windows for awhile, and even triple and quad-booted with Windows and various flavors of *nix. One can get away with marking both /boot and the Windows partition as bootable, or one or the other or *none* and everything still works as long as you've set up your bootloader correctly.

Many threads on forums.gentoo.org confirm that marking both or one or the other as bootable works perfectly well as long as grub.conf/lilo.conf is properly configured.

We appreciate your suggestions though; thanks for taking the time to file the bug. :)

Closing with above explanation. Again, thanks for contributing, and we hope that you continue to enjoy your Gentoo experience.
