gnome-base-2.12.2 depends on net-misc/howl, i have avahi installed with the howl-compat use flag so i should be good.

We can't depend on USE flags being enabled in some other ebuild, not possible with current portage.

i guess i assumed that because 2 packages provide the same fuctionality, that there would be some kind of virtual for that, like virtual/zeroconf. Thats all i was really trying to say, without trying to make sugestions to the devs

Uhm, it's not really a virtual if one of the packages provides the required funtionality only with a certain use flag enabled; there's no way to specify such dependency - see Bug 2272.
