I know this may be obvious to experienced users, but in the faq where you tell how to rebuild the kernel and copy it to boot you have 'cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot'. It took me a while, but somewhere else in the documentation I found 'cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/<kernel-name>' or something close. I believe the instruction in the faq needs to match. I had my kernel rebuilt right for about an hour and a half before I realized it wasn't being used by grub. There might also need to be some instruction about making sure grub is pointed to the kernel you just built.
Fixed. Thanks.
