Description Francois Dupoux 2002-12-16 15:28:39 UTC
I wrote to Daniel Robbins about it on monday 16/12/2002. We want to add partimage to the live CD. There is not ebluid for partimage 0.6.2 for the moment.

Here is the whole mail:
-----------------------------
I am working in the Partimage project. (www.partimage.org) Partimage is a
ghost / Drive Image clone for Linux. It saves partitions into an image file.
your can restore your linux root partition if a crash, a virus, an error, ...

This is a system tool. Because of this, users sometimes have to work on the
linux root partition. Then, we need to run partimage from a boot cd.

We made our own boot CD, but it has a lot of problems. We could work on this, but it's a loss of time for developers of the partimage project. We prefer working on the code.

I though it was possible to get the official gentoo live CD, and adding
partimage, and other system utilities, in order to have an high quality CD. I planned to take the next release of your CD, and add partimage. We need all the disk system utilities, such as parted, gpart, dd, sfdisk, LVM, fsprogs (e2fsprogs, xfsprogs, jfsutils, dostools, ). We also have to put basic editors (vim, and a small clone of emacs), and network configuration tools. We want to make the best CD for the hard disk management. It would be both a rescue CD, and a CD for partitionning and formatting all new hard disks, instead of using Partition Magic the first time. Our current boot cd ISO use 15 MB. I'd like to have an ISO smaller than 50 MB.

The next major version of partimage (0.8.0) will have a nice graphical GUI
like Partition Magic. (It's PartGUI for the moment). It aims to be a Gui for
both parted and the basic partimage features.

In our kernel, we have included speakup for blind, and linux filesystems
(reiserfs, ext2, ext3, jfs, xfs) NOT as module, in order to be able to boot
an existing linux root partition which is not formatted as ext2/ext3, by
giving parameters such as "root=/dev/hda1" to the kernel. What about the
gentoo kernel ?

When I saw your mail, I though it could be possible to have only one official gentoo live CD with partimage. We would avoid to lose time by making two CDs. But there is no ebuild for partimage at the moment.

Is it possible to merge our work ?

Actually, I wrote and submitted an ebuild for partimage about a week ago - bug
11804.

OK, great ;)

OK, I now have the partimage CD on CVS (sys-apps/partimage-0.6.2,) and partimage
will be on the next livecd built (all CDs after 20021221). I have already added
it to my build script, so I am going to close this bug. Thanks for letting me
know about partimage and allowing us to help you by providing a livecd for your
project :)
