dev-lang/perl-5.8.8 has various things in PROVIDE that include version numbers. You'll need to use new-style virtuals if you want to do this and have it work.

Mmm. That should say "use new style virtuals properly", as in || ( perl-core/whatever >=dev-lang/perl-whatever ), and list unversioned PROVIDEs.
