This is a request to add the following as a comment in /etc/modules.d/nvidia, maybe with a warning in the ebuild:
# option nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1

This is the solution posted at:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=343186

Without this line X will hang the system during startup, forcing a hard reset, uncommenting the above fixes the problem.
