I can't find a bug about it and I didn't see any mail to -dev concerning it so I am filing a new bug. Jakub, if this is a dup please mark it, thanks. The hpoj package was recently hard masked and the message says: # Stefan Schweizer <genstef@gentoo.org> (06 Feb 2006) # deprecated - please use net-print/hplip now hpoj is still needed. Not all printers are supported by hplip. I have an R series OfficeJet that ONLY works with hpoj. hplip simply doesn't work with this printer. If you look at the HP page* that lists the supported printers you can see that HP still says to use hpoj for some of them and hplip for others. As long as upstream is still supporting the package and suggesting it for use with certain of their hardware, shouldn't we keep it in the tree? I would hate to have to put this in an overlay if I don't have to (and I'm sure that anyone else with one of these unsupported-by-hplip printers doesn't want to have to do this either). If I'm wrong and hplip actually does support every single HP printer then I would like to know so I can file a bug with HP about my non-working printer and to get them to update their support page. *http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productsmf.php
I masked it because I got some bug reports for it and want to prevent bugs which happen with using it while you can also use hplip. I will leave it in the tree and if you want you can take care of it, but it is recommended to use hplip when possible. No one speaks of removing it (yet)

I'm only staff so I can't take over this ebuild or I would. If it's still in need of someone to work on it when I get around to taking the ebuild quizz I'll look into fixing it. I changed the status to "LATER". If that's wrong feel free to change it to whatever you think is appropriate.
