Description Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-02-06 00:39:14 UTC
"We recommend the use of gamin instead of fam. In order to use gamin, you must have an inotify enabled kernel."

Not true - gamin supports inotify, dnotify, and file-polling (in that order). gamin is a drop in replacement for all things fam and does a much better job even if you don't have a fancy kernel.

Also, the guide doesn't make it obvious enough that you have to "emerge gamin" after unmerging fam, and it should also state that gamin doesn't have an initscript.

<p>
We recommend the use of gamin instead of fam. One way to use gamin is to have an inotify enabled kernel. Gamin supports inotify, dnotify, and file-polling. If you have problems with gamin, you can use fam instead.
</p>

<note>If you would like to know more about gamin configuration, please see <uri>http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/config.html</uri>
</note>

<impo>
Gamin does not have an initscript, so you do not need to add it to any runlevels.
