Wordnet-2.1-compile-fix.patch does not apply, causing the emerge to fail. See Wordnet-2.1-compile-fix.patch-16343.out. wordnet does build and run fine without the patch (in my case, at least). I'm still getting the same error.
This is still broken. I think I know what is happening, though. The patch affects a string containing "$Id$", which is being substituted when commited to cvs. The result being the patch is rejected. I believe you need to use the -ko flag on import.
Fixed it now for real. Someone really should hit the guy who added that braindamaged "feature" to cvs 60 times hard with a sledgehammer.
