When I attempt to emerge any game requiring flatzebra (e.g. burgerspace), flatzebra fails to emerge because configure does not detect SDL_Mixer.

checking for SDL_mixer... configure: error: SDL_mixer not found

        SDL_mixer 1.2.4 or later is needed.

You need to remerge some packages.  revdep-rebuild will probably help with this.  smpeg is likely one that should be remerged.
