ghostscript-afpl 8.53-r1 aborts with certain PS files because of a known bug that has been fixed in their development trunk, which may not see the light of day as an official release for some time.  See

Perhaps Gentoo's ebuild incorporate the patch workaround as posted at

     http://ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-cvs/2005-December/005834.html
