Description Kees 2006-02-02 10:22:48 UTC
I'm trying to install Gentoo on a PC with a VIA C3 cpu. After a few seconds after booting from the cd, the computer reboots. 2004.3 release is ok. (used X86 releases of the minimal install cd, 2005.0 and 2005.1)

At what point does it reboot, exactly? Is it after you get to a prompt? Before?
Comment 2 Kees 2006-02-02 11:08:17 UTC
The reboot happens after the boot-options promtp. It than shows "loading gentoo ........" Then "loading gentoo.igz..........." Right after that is reboots.
I tried as boot options: "gentoo-nofb acpi=off ide=nodma nosata nosmp nosound", same result.

Downloaded the "X86 universal 2005.1-r1" install cd, same result.

Yeah, the Universal and Minimal CD are identical with regards to their kernels.

Try this:

gentoo-nofb nosmp noapic nolapic acpi=off
Comment 4 Kees 2006-02-02 11:30:14 UTC
Same result (gentoo-nofb nosmp noapic nolapic acpi=off)

I reported this problem first on the forum, Someone there suggested that the 2005.x releases were for i686 and up? (Via C3 is not 100% i686 compatible)
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-02-02 11:56:18 UTC
The kernel is compiled for i586 and up. We haven't ever made a CD for i686 and up. The 2004.3 CD was compiled for 486 and up. Perhaps the C3 is missing an instruction for i586, too?
Comment 6 Kees 2006-02-03 13:00:36 UTC
I have had gentoo 1.4 installed on this PC, stage 1 with i586 as target. (http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags see Eden C3/Ezra (Via EPIA)) And that worked al fine.

(A little search on the internet learned me that the Via C3 IS i686 compatible, but misses the cmov instruction which is optional in i686 specification. The problem aparently is that gcc does not think the cmov instruction is optional.)

The Via C3 is at least 100% compatible with i586, so it shouldn't be a problem with the 2005.x releases (?)

PS: My CPU identifies as a Via C3 (Samuel 2)

Could you try the 2006.0 CD? If that doesn't work, I guess I'll come up with a custom CD for you to try to get this resolved properly.
