I just emerged sendmail-8.12.6-r1 and noticed the following errors:

/usr/sbin/sendmail is owned by root.root (should be root.smmsp)
/var/spool/clientmqueue is owned by root.root (should be root.smmsp)
(otherwise, you won't be able to submit mail with sendmail, because the sendmail
msp runs as smmsp:smmsp)

/var/spool/mail has permissions 0755 (should be 1777)

I have updated net-mail/mailbase to 0.00-r5 which adds in a hook for 
creating /var/spool/mail with 1777 permissions.

sendmail-8.12.7 will be out very soon and I will update the new ebuild 
accordingly with the smmsp group fixes.

/var/spool/clientmqueue is recomended: smmp.smmsp mode 0770
Recomedation from: "SENDMAIL INSTALLATION AND OPERATION GUIDE" 1.3.8

sendmail-8.12.7 is currently in portage.  Marked unstable.  This build has all 
known required changes.  This should have only included the change from 
root:smmsp to smmsp:smmsp permissions on /var/spool/clientmqueue.

Also the mailbase-0.00-r5 is still waiting to be unmasked which changes 
permissions on /var/spool/mail to 1777...
