For me app-emacs/auctex-11.55 works; 11.81 and 11.82 get "void-variable AUCTeX-version", and don't give the proper highlighting in the text. I've seen this complaint on the web at http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.auctex.devel/912 so I don't think this is really a gentoo problem. But if it is ... Thanks.
Could you provide the output of `emerge --info`? Also, which version of emacs are you using? (The URL you presented describes a problem related to XEmacs, not FSF Emacs)

Does this still occur with the 11.83 version in portage?
(In reply to comment #3) > Does this still occur with the 11.83 version in portage? Sorry, but 11.83 is not visible to me. I'll try it when it shows up.
(In reply to comment #3) > Does this still occur with the 11.83 version in portage? Just tried it and the problem remains. I reverted back to 11.55.

I have no idea how that happened, but recompiling tex-site.el fixed the problem. I'm sorry, but I forgot to post this here.
> I'm sorry, but I forgot to post this here. You waited nine months for that...so it is ok. Thanks for feedback.
