When using vmware 5.5 with bridged networking enabled, loading the vmnet kernel module can cause the system to freeze. This happens e.g. when using it with a texas instruments chiüp and ndiswrapper-1.2.

There is an unofficial fix out there, which basically replaces some precompiled modules, see
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?messageID=317140&#317140
and
http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmnet-wireless-fix-for-ws55.tar.gz

I don't know how to create a patch, and I'm not even sure whether this should be done (regarding the fix is unofficial. btw it works pretty well here), but I wanted to point this to people having the same problem

Report this upstream...
Comment 3 smrspam88 2006-02-02 13:11:21 UTC
If would do so, if I only knew how, since vmware is closed source and apparently doesn't have a bug tracker

Try here, the community usually provides quick help,
and usually there's always one or two VMWare guys around:

Can you test the new 5.5.2 ebuild? It is currently masked due to it requiring vmware-modules-1.0.0.15 (which pulls down the vmware server sources) but otherwise is perfectly good to be used.

Yeah, vmware-5.5.2 runs fine here! (Although I'm experiencing another issue now, but thats unrelated). But I had to download the vmware-workstation distfiles manually from the vmware servers, portage didn't manage to fetch them automatically!
Thanks anyway,
