Description Perry Lu 2006-01-30 14:58:48 UTC
I've been having this problem for quite a while, with various versions of nvidia driver. When it happens, the screen freezes, but I'm still able to move the mouse pointer. I would also see a line like this on /var/log/kern.log:

NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0000 03d8 00f4e0d5 00f2e3d8 00000000 00f2e3d6

I've tried both agpgart and nvagp, I also tried adding pci=noacpi and acpi=off on boot option, also disabling composition and renderacel. None of them fixed the problem.

The freeze is also more likely to occur when I use mplayer or vmware(especially when using both at the same time).

This ia not a Gentoo-specific bug. Please report this to NVIDIA. Information on how to do this can be found on NVIDIA's website or the README file installed with the driver.
