emerge sync says " * An update to portage is available. It is _highly_ recommended * that you update portage now, before any other packages are updated. * Please do so and then update ALL of your configuration files. " Wasn't meant updating all files for which update is available? It's not clear to me how I can update those of my configuration files for which no update is available. If it was meant this way I suggest to replace "ALL of your configuration files" with "ALL configuration files for which update is available by running etc-update and processing all entries."
This message means that you need to run: emerge -uav portage before doing anything else.

I suggest the URL pointing directly to documentation describing how to "update ALL of your configuration files" to be added as a part of the message produced by emerge sync. This will save some time to virtually all Gentoo users and prevent them from making mistake that could bring problems with their system.
