The new media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4191 driver will not run without the processor option MTRR being present in the kernel. This is not a bug per se. However, at least a message should be added to the end of the ebuild indicating this. Also, it would be a good idea to update the desktop installation guide as well. I'm only entering this here so that other people can find it when they do a search on it. BTW - the new driver appears to work great! Fix: under 'Processor type and features', check the '[*] MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support'. Build new kernel as usual. Search terms: nvidia 1.0.4191 MTRR nvidia-kernel
It's beginning to look like this may be cpu or possibly chipset specific. See this thread at DSLRports: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,5295168~root=unixdsl~mode=flat So far, I'm the only one I know who has encountered this problem. For the record, I'm running: CPU - AMD Athlon XP 1900+ MOBO - ASUS A7V266E (Via KT266A chipset) GA - nVidia 64 meg TNT 2 Vanta The XFree86 error messages were very specific saying that my nvidia chip couldn't be initialized due to no MTRR support. (I wish now I had saved them!!). If anyone needs further information, just post here. :)
Added a suited message and die to pkg_setup() if /proc/mtrr do not exist.
