please go into /var/tmp/portage/gtk+-2.0.9/work/gtk+-2.0.9 and find the 'config.log' file ... post it as an attachment
have you fiddled around with xft-2.0 ? Then this is correct output and you should use the gnome ~ profile : gnome-2.0.3-r1

I didn't fiddle around and i have no working gnome installed as gtk+ and xft were merged as dependencies from other ebuilds.
I used newest masked pango and gtk+ and everything went fine. Bug can be closed.
