VMWare-Workstation-5.5.1.19175 fails to start bridged wireless vmnet with Madwifi-driver-0.1401.20060117. Once both those versions are installed, after rebooting, I am able to do the vmware-config properly, although the vmnet for the bridged wireless network does not start.
I had to downgrade to madwifi-driver-0.1_pre20050420-r1 in order to be able to use VMWare-Workstation-5.5.1.19175. i.e. emerge =net-wireless/madwifi-driver-0.1_pre20050420-r1
Can you test if adding the patch/fix from bug #121199 solves this for you, too?
I've just tested it with the following result: - patching according to README went smoothly (~10min) - restarted machine to get rid of old vmware modules in memory - vmware-config.pl worked all the way through ("Module loads perfectly...") - bridged networking still does not work The module loads perfectly in the running kernel. * Starting VMware services: [ ok ] * Virtual machine monitor [ ok ] * Virtual ethernet [ ok ] * Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 [ !! ] * Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background) [ ok ] * Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background) [ ok ] * NAT service on /dev/vmnet8 [ ok ]
Did not work for me either.
This is not a VMWare or madwifi bug; in most cases you simply cannot bridge over a WLAN interface. Read http://linux-net.osdl.org/index.php/Bridge#It_doesn.27t_work_with_my_Wireless_card.21 for further information. I suggest setting the status to WONTFIX.
Bridging does work with wireless using vmware 5.5+ or 5.0+. I do not recall the exact version. Although, as I mentionned in my first posting, the wireless bridging worked correctly until the new version of madwifi was released, but I do agree that at some point, wireless bridging was not supported. I am aware that bridging over wireless will not work with all devices and all drivers. Although since it works like a charm using an older version of madwifi, I had in mind that it was meant to stay that way.
Hmkay. Interesting... I thought this was impossible with madwifi-driver; I failed to get this working (with madwifi-old) some time ago. Has this issue already been reported upstream?
Can you test the new 5.5.2 ebuild? It is currently masked due to it requiring vmware-modules-1.0.0.15 (which pulls down the vmware server sources) but otherwise is perfectly good to be used.
The VMware-workstation-5.5.2-29772.tar.gz tarball is not on the distfiles mirrors yet; maybe I'll get it from vmware.com directly later today.
Still the same symptoms with app-emulation/vmware-workstation-5.5.2.29772, app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.15, net-wireless/madwifi-ng-0.9.2.
Created attachment 136387 [details, diff] 021_vmnet_wireless-fix.patch Fix wireless-bridgin issue. Drop in files/patches. For vmware-6.*
Forgot to say that this patch must be applied to app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.17-r1
Thanks very much for the patch, and sorry about the delay in getting it applied, but it's now in the vmware overlay for testing. Please let me know if it cures the wireless issues, thanks... 5:)
