Description Charles Christie 2006-01-17 15:10:05 UTC
When anything requires kernel source code or needs to install a kernel module, the installer spits out a message and then dies. First of all, the installer shouldn't die on a failed emerge of a non-system-critical package. Especially a game. (Remember the stepmania ebuild that still hasn't been updated? yeah. it killed my install.) But that's not the issue. Why can't programs requiring kernel source code emerge properly? does it delete the kernel config files after it's done with them? It seems weird. I know programming is really hard work, but do you think you can figure out why kernel-requiring programs fail?
Comment 1 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-17 19:25:35 UTC
Because you probably chose livecd-kernel which only installs binaries and not the kernel source.
Comment 2 Charles Christie 2006-01-18 12:51:40 UTC
No, I made SURE that I clicked "gentoo-sources" checkbox. It's weird! I don't get it. Every time I do an install I click the gentoo-sources button and the bootsplash button as well. Is it the bootsplash button that is causing the error??
Comment 3 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-20 05:01:07 UTC
Run the install in debug mode ("Verbose" option on second tab of "Pre-install Config" page) and then attach the /var/log/installer.log.failed and /tmp/installprofile.xml to this bug.

Moving to Release Media/Installer.

Typical of gentoo bugs - problem exist but close and hope it goes away.

This occurs because the kernal selection does not work on the live cd. It always saves the genkernel in the xml reguardless of what the user has selected

If you can recreate this problem like the previous user please follow agaffney's instructions and provide us with a detailed log. We can't fix bugs without any information other than "it didn't work".
