Using baselayout 1.12.0_pre14, -r1 and -r2 the boot process hangs. It completes ALSA, Sets up Lo, Changes to Runlevel 3, and sets up eth0 including the default root. All of these show [ok] Then it displays 'Setting DNS Domainname to gmurray.org.uk... [ok] At this point it hangs and goes no further. There are no error messages, it just stays there. I waited 7 minutes in case something might timeout but it did not. As the hang takes place before syslog is started, there are no logs showing this. Booting using the install CD and re-emerging baselayout-1.12.0_pre13-r1 (and accepting the config changes) all works again fine. I notice that with pre13, after eth0 is setup, syslog-ng, iptables and ip6tables are started before the DNS Domainname is set. emerge --info Portage 2.1_pre3-r1 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.4.5, glibc-2.3.6-r2, 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre13 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -mtune=nocona -pipe -fstack-protector -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/bind /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -mtune=nocona -pipe -fstack-protector -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.intergenia.de http://mirror.ovh.net/gentoo-distfiles/ http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://ftp.lug.ro/gentoo/ http://gentoo.inode.at/" LANG="en_GB.UTF-8" LC_ALL="en_GB.UTF-8" LINGUAS="en_GB" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X a52 aac aalib acl acpi aim alsa apache2 apm arts audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bonobo browserplugin bzip2 bzlib caps cdparanoia cdr cjk crypt cups curl dbus doc dts dvd dvdr eds emacs emboss encode esd ethereal examples exif expat fam fbcon ffmpeg flac foomaticdb fortran gcj gd gdbm gif glut gmp gnome gnutls gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile hal iconv icq idn ieee1394 imagemagick imlib ipv6 jabber jack java javascript jce jpeg junit kde lcms leim libg++ libgda libwww lm_sensors logrotate lua mad mbox mhash mikmod milter mime mmap mmx mng motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mpi msn ncurses nls nptl nsplugin offensive ogg oggvorbis opengl oscar oss pam pcntl pcre pdflib perl png postgres profile python qt quicktime readline recode sdl sharedmem slang sndfile snmp sockets sox speex spell sqlite sse ssl svg sysvipc tcltk tcpd tetex theora threads tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb v4l vhosts vorbis win32codecs wmf xface xine xml xml2 xmms xv xvid yahoo zlib elibc_glibc kernel_linux linguas_en_GB userland_GNU" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LDFLAGS

I've seen this too with syslog-ng. When it happens, runscript has a subprocess that is doing cat /var/lib/init.d/exclusive/syslog-ng, which is a pipe/fifo, and it seems to block forever. Weirdly, if syslog-ng is removed from the runlevel, the system boots as expected, and then syslog-ng can be started. Note that the lockup occurs (for me) after net, but before any initialization messages from syslog-ng (i.e. Starting syslog-ng...).

In my case it hangs when it tried to start kdm i first thought that it might be a problem caused by kdm so i booted with nox option but that wasn't the case it still wasn't able to boot. Had to boot with ubuntu-livecd chroot into my system and downgrade to another version to get my system working again... I changed back to the latest stable version (=sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.14-r2) because almost all baselayout-updates break something and i masked all packages from that version on Altho i do appreciate your work (and i guess writing something like baselayout in such a way that it works in all possible cases is almost impossible) a bit more testing would be really appreciated from my side especially when it comes to such crucial packages like baselayout... As you can see in my info I'm using a ~amd64-System so it's okey if i have problems with some packages but when it comes to baselayout almost EVERY update makes problems, breaks something...
