I've determined that the problem lies with the xine-lib support, and can be worked around by emerging with USE="-xine mplayer". I need to recompile with debugging symbols to know more, so I'll post when I have a chance.

Problem did not exist before migrating to gcc-3.4. Possibly a piece of code in xine-lib that doesn't work correctly with gcc-3.4? I think it may be related to bug #81179.
