I installed vmware-player and followed instructions to run /opt/vmware/player/bin/vmware-config.pl. This gave an error: Making sure services for VMware Player are stopped. * ERROR: "vmware" has not yet been started. Unable to stop services for VMware Player Execution aborted. At this point vmware-player has not been started because the ebuild einfo says to run the config script first. It would seem that if the config script wants to stop vmware and it's not running it should continue. The einfo also gives this: Also note that when you reboot you should run: * /etc/init.d/vmplayer start except that /etc/init.d doesn't have a vmplayer - just a vmware. Maybe vmplayer is generated during the config?
emerge --info, please...
Emerge info below. Also, note thread on the mail list Re: [gentoo-user] vmware workstation daemon problem (Halo0784 (sent by Nabble.com), Sat Jan 14 14:34:07 2006) which uses this procedure that got it to configure. Now it won't run. ******* Start copy well for the temp fix i did a simple tweak that seemed to work fine backup purpose mv /etc/init.d/vmware /etc/init.d/old-vmware then just link in the vmware file ln -s /etc/vmware/init.d/vmware /etc/init.d/vmware run the config script vmware-config.pl follow the instructions ************* End copy Portage 2.0.53 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.14-gentoo-r5 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.14-gentoo-r5 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.2.3-r6, 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.19-r1, 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig candy ccache distlocks fixpackages sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/gentoo/ ftp://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/gentoo/ rsync://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/gentoo/ ftp://mirror.iawnet.sandia.gov/pub/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/pub/linux/gentoo ftp://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/gentoo/ http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/ ftp://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X aalib acl acpi alsa apm audiofile avi berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 cdr crypt cscope cups curl doc dvd dvdr dvdread emboss encode etheral exif expat f77 fam fbcon foomaticdb fortran freetype gd gdbm gif gimp gimpprint glut gmp gpm gstreamer gtk2 gtkhtml idn imagemagick imap imlib java jpeg junit kde lcms libg++ mad mbox mng mp3 ncurses nls nntp odbc ogg oggvorbis opengl pam passfile pcre perl png postgres ppds python qt readline samba slang slp snmp ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev usb vorbis wmf xprint xv zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS
