Description Brett I. Holcomb 2006-01-13 19:13:09 UTC
I installed vmware-player and followed instructions to run /opt/vmware/player/bin/vmware-config.pl. This gave an error:

Making sure services for VMware Player are stopped.

 * ERROR: "vmware" has not yet been started.
Unable to stop services for VMware Player

Execution aborted.

At this point vmware-player has not been started because the ebuild einfo says to run the config script first. It would seem that if the config script wants to stop vmware and it's not running it should continue.

The einfo also gives this:

Also note that when you reboot you should run:
 * /etc/init.d/vmplayer start

except that /etc/init.d doesn't have a vmplayer - just a vmware. Maybe vmplayer is generated during the config?

emerge --info, please...
Comment 2 Brett I. Holcomb 2006-01-15 13:03:22 UTC
Emerge info below. Also, note thread on the mail list

Re: [gentoo-user] vmware workstation daemon problem
 (Halo0784 (sent by Nabble.com), Sat Jan 14 14:34:07 2006)

which uses this procedure that got it to configure. Now it won't run.

******* Start copy
well for the temp fix i did a simple tweak that seemed to work fine

backup purpose
mv /etc/init.d/vmware /etc/init.d/old-vmware

then just link in the vmware file
ln -s /etc/vmware/init.d/vmware /etc/init.d/vmware

run the config script
vmware-config.pl

follow the instructions

************* End copy
