somehow uninstalling the old mozilla-thunderbird package didn't delete the /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird directory. manually deleting it and then re-emerging mozilla-thunderbird-1.5 fixes the problem. as said in the 1.5 release notes, those dirs have to be completely removed otherwise there will be probs. cheers e
