Some of us have ancient video cards which only get acceleration under 3.3.6. Supposedly there was a 3.3.6 ebuild at some point in the portage tree. I would be much obliged if someone could put it back.
http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gentoo-x86/x11-base/xfree/Attic/ earliest version of xfree86 is 4.0.1 and that is over 2 years old

this is more of just renaming the 4.1.0 stuff to 3.3.6 ... test it and see how it goes oh, and to use, just put it in your /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/ directory and extract it from there
smart idea folks. testing this now, and if it works, I'm going to commit it. =)
If this works, I'd like to know. Happy to test (but new to Gentoo so better at testing almost-finished stuff).

John, have you tried that ebuild?
any progress on this?
There never was an 3.3.6 ebuild, period. And the thing is that I am not going to add it, as it is a full time job (as spyderous may tell you) and I do not have the time. If he can handle it, sure.
Yeah, definitely full time Az. =) If there is a working ebuild, I'm willing to add it to the tree but it will be "as-is," meaning I would spend very little if any time maintaining it, similar to xfree-4.1/4.2. I also want the files to be a downloadable tarball and not something in FILESDIR (see 4.3.99 ebuilds for how this is done); I don't want to make hundreds of thousands of people download those files for something five people use. The only maintaining I'd be willing to do is committing patches to ebuilds or sources posted to our bugzilla, and it will be pretty much the last thing on my maintainance priority list. If another dev wants to commit and maintain this under the conditions I posted above, that would be fine with me. I say those conditions because that dev won't always be around and I don't want to add any extra effort to whoever maintains it after.
Created attachment 21147 [details] revised ebuild new ebuild, has truetype use flag choice for the fonts, includes the contrib tree for 3.3.6, has cvs patches up to when 3.3.6 lost maintainence, has tarballs for patches and gentoo files. have tested it on my p4 compiles and installs (ie ebuild install) fine, but im not going to install it live to my system, if anyone wants this test it and if it works i suppose we can x86 it and commit.
Created attachment 21184 [details] includes provide OK Ive tested the actual XServer and got it working in both mono and vga16 mode. This is a limitation as im using a SiS chipset which just would not work under any of the other servers. I forgot to add the PROVIDE in the previous ebuild, fixed here.
Shouldn't this be added and any issues will get added to bugs.gentoo.org at a later date? If it's not going to be added then we should let Andrew know.
Andrew will probably be adding it at some point in the near future.
Can ANYONE that wants this added please speak up now. This will be added if there is a high enough demand.
Pending greater demand, which I doubt will come.
Can someone please update this ebuild. This one seems to be outdated/broken. perl. I belive the "sys-devel/perl" dependency is now "dev-lang/perl". Also SRC_URI="${SRC_PATH}/source/X${MY_SV}src-1.tgz does not reference ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.3.6/X336src-1.tgz. Finaly and most important, X_UPDATES="http://www.volutin.net/~andrew/GENTOO/XFree86-${PV}-patch-${EX_VER}.tar.bz2" X_FILES="http://www.volutin.net/~andrew/GENTOO/XFree86-${PV}-gentoo-files-${EX_VER}.tar.bz2" no longer exist. I need these files to complete the emerge. Can someone please provide these? Thanks.
