Description Charles Christie 2006-01-09 12:05:15 UTC
In the GTK version of the Installer, I could just click a tab and check the cmd line output. However, the dialog version is better for me because it offers more choices. And linux is all about choices, right?

OK, so here's the issue. Is there any way to view the cmd line output so I can tell if an emerge failed, or if something fishy is going on? For instance, my computer is quite old, so when it was emerging dev-libs/pts (I think that's what it was), I thought it was just a huge program. It stayed there for at least 7 hours before I figured that it locked up, because I doubt that this library could take more time to emerge than X11. So, I tried again, and it locked up on the harddrive phase. Once again, I knew this wasn't right. However, it would make things much easier if I could check the cmd line output by pushing a button like TAB or space bar or return/enter or something similar to the GTK version.

Unfortunately, that's not really possible with dialog. It isn't exactly the most flexible "GUI toolkit" (that term is being used *very* loosely). If you are getting lockups, that is a hardware problem, especially if it's happening at different points.

What choices is the dialog frontend giving you that the GTK frontend is not?

a cleaner USE flag layout and a GCC options dialog. If you could put those into the GTK installer I'd be a happy guy.

You still haven't said where the dialog frontend offers more choices. By GCC options dialog, I assume you mean a thing to select CFLAGS. The GTK frontend has that as well.

I think he is referring to the output stored in the logs.
You can open up a separate terminal (ctrl-alt-f2 or whatever) and tail -f /var/log/installer.log and /tmp/compile_output.txt to view the log output, which is the same contents as shown in the gtkfe tabs, during the installation.

oh. Thanks. By the way, I've got a better wording for that. The cmd line installer doesn't have more choices, it just has an interface that I like better. One problem, though, would be that, on the GCC page, the little red lines next to the options would change even a little to let me know what options are set and which ones are not.

Moving to Release Media/Installer.
