Description . 2006-01-08 14:18:40 UTC
I'm doing a fresh install on my system from a 2005.1 install on my opteron system
during emerge xorg-x11 I get

making Makefiles in programs/xdm...
make[3]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6/work/xc/programs'
../../config/imake/imake: Permission denied
../../config/imake/imake: Cannot open /tmp/IIf.t0O1l1 for write.
  Stop.
make[3]: *** [xdm/Makefile] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6/work/xc/programs'
make[2]: [Makefiles] Error 2 (ignored)

at that point it continues to emerge and go further until it totally stops,

what's `ls -ld /tmp` show?
Comment 2 . 2006-01-09 21:06:13 UTC
my bad, it was just tmp not being 1777, fixed that and it worked until it ran into dependency issues with (iirc it was either zip or tar) not being installed. Why emerge -e system didn't pick that up I don't know. but, I will see later what happens
