The executable provided by the sci-mathematics/gimps comes directly from upstream. AFAIK there's no way to just fix it on our end. I also wouldn't want to compile this package from sources -- in the case of GIMPS, accuracy is very important and I imagine any results obtained using a program compiled with some random CFLAGS could be questioned and cause unnecessary trouble both for the GIMPS project and for the users.
