Description Benjamin Smee (strerror) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 16:39:06 UTC
I'm currently mentoring someone and its come to my attention that our ebuild quiz no longer accurately reflects our policies when it comes to stabilization. There are a number of questions that relate to stabilization, many of which are either straight out wrong or need to be rewritten with the new policies in mind.
Comment 1 Jan Kundrát (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 16:45:28 UTC
Stuff under /proj/en/devrel/ is not managed by GDP.
Comment 2 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 16:52:00 UTC
why dont you be more specific as to which questions you feel are inaccurate
Comment 3 Benjamin Smee (strerror) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 17:05:59 UTC
Because I was lazy and in a rush spanky :)

9(a) - this is probably no longer appropriate as worded as normally devs should not be stabilizing unless they have permissions to do so or are in a ARCH team.
9(c) - this also needs to be reworded or removed altogether for the same reasons as above.

On a slightly different note, is the precise role of the "new" council been updated (does it need to be?) in the devel dox?
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 17:17:50 UTC
that's the point of 9 ... the new dev in training is supposed to answer something along the lines of contacting the relevant arch teams or if they're on the arch teams they can do it themselves etc...

as for the council, i dont believe it's mentioned in the handbook
Comment 5 Benjamin Smee (strerror) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 17:24:10 UTC
well if you think it is clear enough then close this. It just seems to me that the phrasing of the questions has the expectation of a technical answer along the lines of things to check and do for stabilising rather then the newer way of contacting the arch team etc. I just remember that i hated the wording of some of the questions when I did the exam and wanted to make sure that it was as concise as possible
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-01-05 17:32:45 UTC
the questions seem pretty cut & dry to me ... you want to stable a package, what needs to happen

if you think it's confusing, then suggest alternate wording
Comment 7 Benjamin Smee (strerror) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-06 01:58:22 UTC
9(c) starts with "You wish to mark an ebuild "stable" ....
To me that implies that the reader of the quiz should be thinking that S/HE is going to mark the ebuild stable. This is generally not the case (obvious exceptions being when dev is in ARCH team or has explicit permission from the ARCH team) so I would reword it to something like "What steps need to be taken to have an ebuild marked stable".
Comment 8 Tim Yamin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-06 11:24:39 UTC
Sidenote: The quiz is part of the recruiment procedure which is managed by the recruitment team and the person you need to speak to is avenj; don't really see what the Council has to do with this.
Comment 9 Benjamin Smee (strerror) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-06 11:36:03 UTC
tim: who brought the council into this? My only question was the relevant information about the newer form of the council updated in our documentation. I'm not suggesting that the council is responsible for changing the wording of this, if in fact, anyone even agree's that the wording is even vague.

how about:
You wish to have an ebuild marked "stable" ...

i like the current wording as it trips up the new dev, but the second version works for me
Comment 11 Benjamin Smee (strerror) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-06 15:45:01 UTC
its better then the current version. thanks.
Comment 12 Jon Portnoy (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-06 19:03:25 UTC
Wording fixed. No new revision since it's such a small change.

Devrel: the quiz could still use lovin'. If somebody can maintain it fulltime that'd be a Good Thing, particularly someone who doesn't mind trying to work with Ciaran (I won't) to get equizapp in there.
