I was able to emerge rune just fine... but when I run the game, the video is all screwed up (or nonexistent), and when I kill the process, it won't relinquish control of my mouse and I have to restart the window manager. I have gotten other games (including SDL games) to work fine, including UT2004 and Quake 3. Not sure what's going on here. upgrading to the unstable libsdl 1.2.9-r1 seems to have fixed the problem.
Fixed with -r2... thanks for the bug report!
