Very nice idea and trivial to implement.

Would infra prefer an error directory inside htdocs or one level above like images? If we could use language dirs like we use elsewhere, it would make it easier to localize later.

I have already implemented it on my test site. All we need is a 404.xml (preferably /errors/en/404.xml) and a 'ErrorDocument 404 /errors/en/404.xml' in the apache config.
