It's a configure fault because configure doesn't run correctly with --without-gnome, instead on the ebuild --without-gnome is useless with USE=-gnome because it is disabled by default, it should be only --with-gnome when USE=gnome, I'm not good with ebuild so I don't know how it should be done.
