Description Attila Stehr 2006-01-03 15:45:03 UTC
When I tried to isolate some problems with XMMS I noticed that the descriptions of most of the plugins are not helpful.

examples:
*********

Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-voice
---> my suggestion: Shout at XMMS to control it.

Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-esd
---> my suggestion: enlightened sound daemon (gnome) output plugin

Description: A XMMS plugin for MAD
---> my suggestion: a plugin to play mp3 files in XMMS using libmad (results in better quality (?))

Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-mpg123
---> my suggestion: a plugin to play mp3 files in XMMS

I found most of the suggestion texts on http://www.xmms.org/ - so suitable descriptions can be gathered from there.

--------------------------------------------------

I didn't find the plugins below on the plugins section of http://www.xmms.org although it is given as their homepage. So there should not only be added descriptions but the homepage entry be altered too.

Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-song-change
Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-mikmod
Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-echo
Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-stereo
Description: Xmms Plugin: xmms-tonegen

Regards
~ Attila

ps: A good example in this regard is audacity -> Description: Free crossplatform audio editor.

the descriptions are just fine and clear there is no reason to update them. Almost everyone knows what they want when installs a xmms plugin.

Thanks anyway.

"the descriptions are just fine and clear there is no reason to update them."

The descriptions are NOT fine. Please do not add a description at all if the only thing you do is repeating the package name! Browsing packages.gentoo.org for xmms plugins is no fun when you get no _useful_ description - see examples above!

"Almost everyone knows what they want when installs a xmms plugin."

I'm sorry, but IMO thats not true, especially when the command line output of XMMS emerge finish is:
----------------------------------------------------
>>> original instance of package unmerged safely.
* media-sound/xmms now just provides the xmms binary and libxmms.
* All plugins that were packaged with xmms are now provided by other
* packages in media-plugins. Some of these are automatically pulled in
* based on USE flags. Others you will need to emerge manually. The
* following is a list of packages which were previously provided by
* media-sound/xmms that are not automatically emerged:
* media-plugins/xmms-blur-scope
* media-plugins/xmms-cdaudio
* media-plugins/xmms-disk-writer
* media-plugins/xmms-echo
* media-plugins/xmms-ir
* media-plugins/xmms-joystick
* media-plugins/xmms-opengl-spectrum
* media-plugins/xmms-sanalyzer
* media-plugins/xmms-song-change
* media-plugins/xmms-stereo
* media-plugins/xmms-tonegen
* media-plugins/xmms-voice
* media-plugins/xmms-wav
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
>>> media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r15 merged.
---------------------------------------------
^ That cries for "you got to know me"!!!

Okay, some questions:
1) Where do I know from that I can use xmms-mpeg123 or xmms-mad for mp3s?
2) Hum ... I always thought I get stereo output from XMMS if the mp3 is stereo ... oh ... there is a xmms-stereo plugin ... tsts bad XMMS - needs a plug in for stereo output ... well then ... emerge xmms-stereo >:-[

Youre welcome!

this is minor stuff there are much better things to fix rather then this if you don't understand its too bad you have the url of the offical plugins site. Your suggestions are not clear and correct. I won't change the descriptions since theres nothing more do tell about them.

"this is minor stuff"
Agreed, so severity stays trivial but I reopen the bug!

------------------------------------------------------------
if you don't understand its too bad [.] you have the url of the offical plugins site
Do you think that "xmms-voice" tells everyone that it is a plugin to control xmms by voice? Maybe it's good for "removing" the voice from a song or to boost it. It is not clear!

As I already said the _given_ homepage is not correct for some plugins since the plugins are not listed there. And that's why people can not find out on the _given_ homepage what those plugins are good for. Of cource one could investigate and use google... but hey, why don't you remove the links to the homepages completely and advise the gentoo users to look for them themselves?! That would save a lot of work and let you get rid of bug reports telling you that the homepage has - for instance - moved or no longer maintained?!

(I repeat myself now a little but it's for clarification)

Then, I did not say that I have the web sites for the plugins which are not listed on www.xmms.org, BUT that does not change the fact that the WRONG site is given! Maybe there can be a little invenstigation on that.

But ... I'll try to keep THIS problem in my mind and look for the appropriate web sites - IF you guarantee that the web site entry will be altered then. :-)

----------------------------------------------------------------
Your suggestions are not clear and correct.
When saying my suggestions are NOT correct you probably are correct. _You_ are the expert, but try to see the problem from the users point of view as well and give a useful description.

In case you refer to xmms-voice ... I got the information here from http://www.xmms.org/plugins.php?details=60 - if the xmms-voice in the portage tree is a DIFFERENT one - thus my suggestion wrong - is is even more important to have a USEFUL description!

------------------------------------------------------

If something stayed unclear please tell me and I'll try to explain.

i won't change the descriptions please DO NOT reopen this bug because i consider it invalid. I say our users are not stupids to the point of don't know what the plugins does just by a simple description.

Again i won't change any descriptions for now please DO NOT reopen the bug again.
