I went to gentoo.org, searched for "search" and didn't find anything.

Either there is no search or the search is called different than search.
In the first case I suggest a search function to be added to the website, in the other to rename the search back to "search".

Until http://wwwredesign.gentoo.org/ gets final and implemented, there won't be any search.

Yup, Jakub is correct. When the redesign goes live it will have a search function that covers all gentoo.org domains. Until then just use google and put site:gentoo.org at the end of the search string.
