Description Daniel Beckham 2006-01-02 10:34:14 UTC
memcached 1.1.12-r2 fails to start with the following error message:

"failed to daemon() in order to daemonize"

Manually starting the daemon on the command line without the -d (daemonize) option works just fine.

I'm seeing this on two newly installed 2005.1 systems.

Can you post a backtrace?
Comment 2 Daniel Beckham 2006-01-02 12:17:06 UTC
It seems that after my install, I ended up with the wrong set of permissions for the / directory. Making sure that the permissions of / are set correctly fixes this issue. (I set mine to 0755)

This seems to have been related to this bug: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114507.

Good catch.
