I ran pkg-clean (from gentoolkit) because there were a lot of duplicate 
packages (differing in version). I selected to deinstall an older spython 
version. After that, emerge and ebuild weren't working anymore. It seemed that 
all files of spython were removed instead of only the older ones.

I resolved the problem by downloading a binary package of the gentoo ftp site, 
unpacking it and copying it's contents to the appropriate place. Now emerge 
was working again.

Unless you are able to provide me with a log of your misfortune, I will not be
able to figure out just what went wrong. I cannot reproduce your problem here.

This is probably not a pkg-clean bug but a spython bug. Check this thread:
