I'd like to see a Gentoo kernel with OpenMosix and Xen support for seemless load balancing and high availibility when running VMs. Both of these already exist, but as seperate sources. Could this merged patch set be added to Portage? Rather than yet another kernel, what if the USE flags 'openmosix' and 'xen' were added to gentoo-sources? If these flags were present, the ebuild would grab the patches and apply them to the kernel. The benefits would be less packages to worry about and the fact that the kernel versions would stay in sync be more up to date. The possible negative is that a significant change in the kernel could cause the patches to fail and delay release. What do you think? http://www.moshebar.com/tech/?q=node/43 If you read that, it is possible that OpenMosix will distribute Xen support natively. I'm not sure how this will affect a Gentoo ebuild. Perhaps we must wait simply wait for upstream to see?
This would be a whole project in itself (who knows what the interactions between the kernel components are?) Be patient and wait for Moshe and the openmosix people.
Chris: this week I will set up my two test Netfinity 4000Rs and give the patch set a go. I too am curious how they interact. If it is satisfactory, I will create an ebuild and post it here.
Last time I checked, this patchset was unstable and last time I checked, it was a developers-only release according to the openmosix site.
This is a big project and not suitable for an ebuild at the moment.
