This is far too much, I'm the first one to be against ads and stuff (I was the
one that reported the problem in the first place) but saying that we can't host
"personal file" is impossilbe to enforce and nonetheless wrong. I share some
conference pics and stuff on my gentoo dev space, I don't think there's anything
wrong with that. I have countless of examples of stuff that could be considered
"personal" and not strictly related to gentoo in many public_html that still is
not doing any harm. I agree for everything else, it's just the "personal file" bit
that worries me.

As usual "common sense" should apply ;).
Comment 3 Kurt Lieber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-30 16:07:35 UTC
The line between "personal" and "gentoo" is blurry at best, so I agree that we shouldn't outright ban those types of files.

Thanks for taking the initiative and updating this page, btw.

Sadly, I've come to realize that a few people define 'common sense' differently in Gentoo. So stating that will do no good imo. I also agree with the personal files thing. That's going to be hard to enforce.
Comment 5 Curtis Napier (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-30 18:36:27 UTC
OK, I did that really fast and didn't think the personal files thing would cause a problem. I was just trying to "cover all the bases" so to speak. How about this instead:

------------------------

Your dev space is for Gentoo related files. You may not host files for your company/home business, pornography or any file that is considered illegal in the United States (toucan is located in the USA). Pages in your public_html folder are viewable by the world and their contents should follow the same rules. You may not use your dev space to make money in any way. This includes banner swapping, auctions (or hosting images for your auctions) or google ads. As usual, common sense should apply.

----------------

If everyone agrees (or has a better suggestion) I'll make a patch and attach it to the bug. Thanks for the feedback!

Sounds good to me, I agree with lance that "common sense" is kinda subjective,
but maybe leaving it there is better than nothing as long as we don't point to
it when trying to "enforce" this.
